KSS is a group of mountain bike enthusiasts in the Southern Kansas/Wichita area. We love to ride bikes, race bikes and build new trails. We ride mountain and road bikes and simply love all facets of outdoor living. Among us are cyclists, mountain bikers, runners, swimmers, adventure racers, geocachers and so much more. The common thread is that we sincerely enjoy life on the trail.

Since KSS has been organized, members have spent hundreds of hours maintaining and building mountain bike trails. We have added several miles of singletrack at Camp Horizon and created a mountain bike trail near Wichita called Miller's Meadows. We have also participated in IMBA trail design workshops and applied newly acquired techniques on our local trails.

Adding additional trails in the Wichita area is a top priority for KSS. Currently, we have a project in the works at Fall River, 1 hour east of Wichita. We have secured a grant for $21k from the Kansas Trails Council. Now what we really need are the hours of manpower to qualify for reimbursement and to make this trail a success.

Santa Fe Lake: Introducing the New Trail Steward

E-mail Print PDF

From David Snider:

Santa Fe Lake is located about 20 miles East of Wichita.  Historically this trail system used to be the only set of trails around Wichita; but, has recently become overgrown and forgotten with the addition of the trails at Horizon and Miller's.  The area has some promising terrain with good elevation changes and trees.  There are some challenges we face as trail builders in creating a usable network of trails out here with the dam spillway, but with the help from our members and the community, it can be done.  There is a small group of individuals interested in and currently working on reviving these trails.  We have the blessing from the local land manager who would like to see the trail system become something everyone can enjoy.  The lake has great fishing holes and offers a swimming location for the multisport inclined.  Please feel free to contact us if you are interested in working on these local trails.

Chapin Park Opened 04/17/2010

There was a good turnout not only of cyclist but of other park users as well. The trails in the grassy areas need to be better defined and ridden a lot but the basic idea is there. There was talk of spraying the trails with herbicide to help with the defining. The good drainage should help with the wear and tear on millers. Why ride in the mud when you can ride a dry trail just a few miles away. We had a good ride up the river path (except for Vicki beating herself up on a curb...she needs MTB 101). On the return trip we rode on south side of the river from John Mack Bridge to Chapin Park. There is dirt road on top of the dike and evidence of bike path under construction on the south side of the road. Near the Hydraulic street bridge there are trails that go under the bridge and come out in Chapin park.

Wet sections on any trail

There are several areas on the trail the keep water and can takes weeks to dry out. Please walk your bike or avoid these areas until crossings are constructed. I am in the process of building a few ladder bridges to help in these areas.
