Just a quick note to update on the KSS club trip to Lawrence, 10/12-14, which ended up being only 10/12&13. Four of us got away on Friday (Paula, Ken, Kelly & I), drove up to Lawrence, pitched camp at Clinton Lake and hit the Lawrence river trails, where we joined up with Kelly’s cousin from KC. We rode 3 laps—24 or 25 miles—in beautiful fall weather on the fast, smooth, flowing, fun, all down-hill Lawrence river trails. Did I say it was fun? You bet it was. Afterwards, we downed a few recovery drinks and went back to camp, sat around the campfire and had a good time. After that, things started to go downhill. Friday night there were several waves of severe thunderstorms that passed through the area, dumping a lot of rain, with high winds and very CLOSE lightening strikes. That would normally be enough to keep one awake in a tent but on top of that, the masked intruder that rifled all our belongings outside of the tent would not go away, despite Ken’s threatening charges and a few verbal warnings. In the end, he got all my cookies, Paula’s chips and some other stuff before giving up around daylight. One of the boxes seemed to be very promising to him and he just wouldn’t give up, banging around on it for hours. The leaks in the floor of my tent also helped me stay alert to what was going on outside. Finally, the rain died down enough for us to get up and pack up our soggy tents and gear and go home, since there was no way anything would be dry enough to ride. Although it was an abbreviated trip, it was still a lot of fun and we should do something like this a lot more often. Next time! |
